The best teachers were the ones who taught us how to learn.

Despite my doubts that I could make it, Dan Rupert encouraged me to go to college and helped me with my financial aid forms.  I managed to get a BS and MS in Computer Science and have had a long, fun career at Texas Instruments so I've always appreciated his help.  My sister Kath had a similar experience getting support from Mr. Rupert.  I wonder if he knows how many people he helped?

Mrs. Anne (Tuohy) Wulfhorst.  She worked with her classes thru books, movies, art, even music.  She was an amazing woman.  Nancy Buettner getting caught in sister Donald Joseph's window behind the curtain.  Mr. Adams drove by and saw her.  Sister Donald Joseph just did not know what to think of 5th period religion class.

Pam Hanser, the best English teacher I ever had.  Really prepared us for college and was better than most college professors.

I worked with a lot of great teachers, most of whom loved their jobs.  I was fortunate to start teaching when we had many Notre Dame nuns.  They were great to be around and helped me.

I remember going to coaches parties after basketball games.  They were great parties, especially after a Blue Jay win.

As I am sitting here in my study writing this check for my alumni dues and thinking of how many things have changed especially in the use of manners and discipline that have been orchestrated in most of our public schools today as well as in our society as a whole.  It is my opinion the phrase "political correctness has run amuck", and has destroyed the true meaning of what is meant by being a good, sincere and honorable person or student.  My grandson who is a senior at Carlsbad High School is at the top of his graduating class of 365, which makes me very proud of him.  He will be flying back east this month to be interviewed at Yale University.

I fell very fortunate that I was able to start attending school during my fifth grade at St. John's and having Sister Walfrieda as my teacher for one year who had a strong German accent.  She instilled principles in me which were very helpful in developing a good character.  When Sister Walfrieda said to me, "Don, I'll box your ears, right and left" in her German accent this was done to get me to pay attention only.  She never laid a hand on me.  Perhaps being married to my wife for 53 years who also came from Germany is one of the reasons I remember the teacher who has the same heritage as my wife.  I sincerely hope that what I said about Sister Walfrieda is not taken out of context but only acknowledged in the spirit it is written.
